Abdomınoplasty (Tummy Tuck Surgery)
Men and women, whose bodies are properly shaped but stomach skin is sagged and unresponsive to diets and exercises, are candidates for this surgery. Abdominoplasty is extremely beneficial especially in women who had multiple deliveries and have sagging and skin around their abdominal region containing cracks along weakened abdominal muscles. Patients who have an intention to lose weight should postpone this surgery. It is also beneficial for women who intend on giving birth to postpone the surgery until the postpartum period.
There are two types of this surgery:
- Full tummy tuck surgery (Abdominoplasty)
- Mini tummy tuck surgery (Mini-abdominoplasty)
Abdominoplasty is a surgical intervention where excessive fat and sagging skin tissue of the middle and lower abdominal regions are removed and the abdominal muscles are tightened. However, it is not a treatment for obesity. Obese patients should lose weight as much as possible before the surgery. A significantly improved appearance of the stomach and belly can be achieved by this surgery, but it will leave a permanent scar. There are many techniques used by plastic surgeons for this surgery. Abdominoplasty can be performed together with surgeries to repair the contours of the body (plastic surgeries of breast, liposuction etc.) or other surgeries (womb, ovarian surgeries etc.).
While full abdominoplasty may last for 2-5 hours depending on the extent, mini-abdominoplasty lasts for 1-2 hours. Frequently, it is necessary to make an incision from one hip to the other just above the pubic area and a round second incision around the belly. The incision line of mini abdominoplasty is shorter and it may not be necessary to change the belly area.
During the first couple of postoperative days, there may be abdominal swelling and pain which can be eased with pain killers. It is necessary to stay in the hospital for 1-3 days in average. The patients can return back to work after 7-14 days. Though the scars may seem to be worsening during the first 3-6 months, it is a normal process and it may take 9 months to one and a half years for the scars to flatten out and fade away. Even though the scars do not disappear completely, they can easily be concealed in the pubic area. Mini or full abdominoplasty procedures provide an excellent result for patients who have weak abdominal muscles and excessive sagging. In most patients, the excellent outcomes can be preserved through years with regular exercise and diet.
